International Standard looks to curb theft of personal data

Privacy has taken on new dimensions in our hyperconnected world. New guidance from IEC, ISO and ITU – the world’s three leading international standards bodies – has just been published, providing a code of practice for the protection of personally identifiable information.

Uber is making headlines for its reaction to the theft of personal data of 57 million drivers and users. The July 2017 breach of Equifax, a large US credit bureau, exposed the social security numbers, birthdates and addresses of 143 million people. And last month, Yahoo, just prior to its acquisition by telecommunications conglomerate Verizon, shared new intelligence that a data breach in 2013, thought to have affected only a billion users, had in fact compromised all three billion Yahoo user accounts.

Producing valid results that are widely trusted is at the heart of laboratory activities. ISO/IEC 17025:2017 allows laboratories to implement a sound quality system and demonstrate that they are technically competent and able to produce valid and reliable results.

ISO/IEC 17025 also helps facilitate cooperation between laboratories and other bodies by generating wider acceptance of re...

Highlighting the importance of standards on World Aids Day

Today is World AIDS Day, a day to show support for people living with HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s also a day to raise awareness about condom safety.

Condoms are highly effective in providing protection against HIV, that attacks the body’s immune system and can lead to AIDS, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And to make sure that condoms indeed function in this capacity, they are manufactured and tested to the highest ISO standards to ensure that they don’t break or leak when used.

ISO’s work on condoms is carried out by technical committee ISO/TC 157 on non-systemic contraceptives and STI barrier prophylactics...

Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) certification will smooth your products’ path to market anywhere in the world.

SGS’s RoHS program helps companies minimize the financial and administrative burden of RoHS compliance. Our program is a single product certification which can be extended to a product series provided the range uses the same raw materials, similar management system and the basic design has not significantly changed.

The SGS RoHS Certification Mark is independent verification of your compliance to RoHS. It demonstrates your commitment to quality and achieving consistent production.

The process

The first step is for you to complete all relevant technical documentation...

Increasing regulation on the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment places responsibility on manufacturers, retailers and suppliers to prove that their products comply.

Third party RoHS testing from SGS enables you to ensure compliance to the relevant EU RoHS directive.

All new products need to be monitored for the concentration of restricted substances including, lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).

Your challenge is to ensure that no product exceeds the RoHS limits of 0.1% or 1,000ppm (except for cadmium, which is limited to 0.01% or 100ppm) by weight of homogenous material. We offer different ways of testing:

Non destructive analysis

We use several non destru...

As a retailer importing electrical and electronic products into the European Union it is your responsibility to prove that your stock complies with relevant RoHS testing legislation and guidelines.

To manage your supply chain, from raw material to components and shipment requires an effective and robust quality management system. You need to have a test and control mechanism in place to ensure, and prove, that imported products meet the necessary requirements.

As the market leader in RoHS testing our reports have an excellent reputation worldwide.

In exceptional circumstances some local authorities will not accept RoHS test reports at face value. To combat this issue we have developed a secure database driven solution, the SGS RoHS Certificate of Conformity (CoC). We have taken our network of laboratories, quality assurance experts and European based Certification Bodies (CBs) and linked them to a single database. This ensures that RoHS test reports created in one part of the world are acceptable everywhere.

How does it work?

Step 1 – Online database ensures global access
With the approval of manufacturers, who own the RoHS test reports, we build a database of all test reports, which is accessible worldwide...

Manufacturers, retailers and suppliers of electrical and electronic products must comply with different regulations about the Restriction of Hazardous Substances relevant to their end market.

What is RoHS?

The RoHS2 Directive, 2011/65/EU, restricts the use of lead and other potentially hazardous substances including Cadmium, Mercury Chromium VI, PBBs and PBDEs contained in electrical and electronic products. RoHS limits these substances to 0.1% or 1,000 ppm (except for cadmium, which is limited to 0.01% or 100 ppm) by weight of homogenous material.

On June 4, 2015, Directive 2011/65/EU was amended by Directive 2015/863 to add 4 new phthalates increasing the total number of restricted substances to 10...
